Abstract Aiming at the problem that projectile charge is easy to be damaged when penetrating multi-layer targets, which affects safety of use, light gas gun was used as loading source carry out experiment penetration into single-layer, two-layer and three-layer 45# steel plates. The damage states were obtained by industrial CT technology. Combined with numerical simulation results, formation evolution mechanism analyzed. results show penetrates plate an angle 15 ° speed 400m / s, appears after second layer plate, mainly occurs tail charge. When third expands along axial transverse direction; tensile wave formed reflection free surface main reason for damage. repeated action compression tension leads continuous expansion cracks.
